This polymorphic species is widely distributed in mast of Eurasia and N. America. M. nemorosa Bess., M. praecox Hülph. and M. serotina Hülph. are included. The species s. lat has been introduced into N. and S. America and New Zealand. In S. Europe subsp. laxiflora Rchb. dominates.
