This variable species occurs in N. Europe, lceland, Greenland, northeastern N. America and Kamchatka (subsp. macloviana) and in western and northwestern N. America, along the Andes and on the Falkland Is. and Hawaii (subsp. pachystachya [Cham.] Hult.). Thus, it is a bipolar plant (Du Rietz in Acta phyt. Suec. 13/1940, p. 218 and map p. 220). It also belongs to the amphi-atlantic plants (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 204 and map 185).
