This species occurs in N. and C. parts of Eurasia. It seems to be native in most of the distribution area but is favoured by agriculture. This species and the closely related B. orthoceras Ledeb. have together a circumpolar distribution pattern (Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 162, 373 and map 154).
