This species originates from Eurasia. It is common as a weed, especially in outlying localities. It has been introduced into N. America and New Zealand. In addition, a presumably native taxon is distinguished in N. America (var. mississippiensis [Gatt.] Fem.). The species is reported among the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 224 and map 213).
