This species occurs as a native plant in Eurasia and N. Africa. The population in SE. Asia is distinguished as subsp. divaricata Krösche, which also occurs locally throughout the range of the species (Fl. Eur. 3/1972, p. 248). The species has probably been introduced into N. America and certainly into C. and S. Africa, S. America and New Zealand. Cf. world map in Meusel et al. 1978, p. 401.
