This species is restricted to Europe (approximately S of the line and on the Skagerrak coast) and adjacent parts of Asia Minor and Iran. It has been introduced into parks and gardens in N.C. Europe, S. Scandinavia and Scotland and also into eastern N. America and New Zealand. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1978, map p. 347.
