This species is widely distributed in Eurasia. There may be some occurrences in N. Africa. It has been introduced at least into eastern tropical S. Africa and eastern N. America. The dispersal has been favoured by clearings in the forest landscape. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 48.
