This species is mainly restricted to W. and C. Europe. The population on the Azores is distinguished as subsp. azorica (Horn.) Palh. (Sjögren in Mem. Soc. Brot. 22/1973, p. 255 ff.). Cf. also Meusel et al. 1978, map p. 333.
