250 Glyceria maxima (Hartm.) Holmb. complex

This problematic complex of taxa has a circumpolar distribution (Bulten, Circumpol. I, p. 184 and map 173). Of these taxa subsp. maxima occurs in most of Europe (except N and most of SW) and parts of W. and C. Asia. It was introduced during the last centuries into most of Fennoscandia as a fodder-plant. It merges southeastwards into subsp. arundinacea (Kunth). In E. Asia the closely related G. triflora (Korsh.) Kom. (Hultén: subsp. of G. maxima), G. leptolepis Ohwi and G. kamtschatica Kom. occur, each one with its particular distribution. Over most of temperate N. America G. maxima subsp. grandis (S. Wats.) Hult., occurs, replaced towards NW by G. Hulténiana Löve.
