This species is now widely distributed in Eurasia and scattered in N. America. According to Fl. Eur. 3/1972, p. 114, four subspecies can be distinguished in Europe. The species is often cultivated outside its original range. It has often escaped from cultivations to suitable localities. It has been introduced into several parts of the world (Africa, N.
