This species originates mainly from the Mediterranean region. Two subspecies are distinguished (cf. Fl. Eur. 1/1964, p. 339). Subsp. dissecta (Lag.) Bonn. Is mapped separately. The species s. lat. is widely spread from cultivations, occurring locally, and mostly occasionally, on open and waste ground in most of Europe, S. Africa, parts of Asia, N. and S. America and New Zealand.
