This species is widely distributed in Eurasia and N. America. The distribution limits are to a certain extent schematical. The N. American var. ovalis (Bigel.) T. & G. is mapped separately. The species belongs to the circumpolar plants, although published among the amphi-atlantic ones (Hultén, Amphiatl., p. 166 and map 148). Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 167.
