This widespread species originates from Europe, N. Africa and W. Asia. It has spread as a weed within this area and, for instance, also to S. Africa, E. Asia, N. and S. America, S. Australia and New Zealand. The present distribution is discontinuous circumpolar (Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 264 and map 255). Cf. also Meusel et al. 1978, map p. 396.
