This seashore and locally inland species belong to the C. paleacea group (cf. no. 468). It has an amphiatlantic distribution (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 292 and map 273). The Pacific population has been distinguished as a separate taxon, subsp. cryptocarpa (C. A. Mey.) Hult.
