This originally Eurasiatic species is widely spread by human settlement in Europe, Africa, America, Australia etc. It is replaced eastwards by the closely related, small-flowered M. suaveolens Ledeb. Nowadays M alba belongs to the discontinuous circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 238 and map 230).
