This species s. lat. is polymorphic and very widespread. For the subspecies distinguished in Europe and their general distribution, see Fl. Eur. 1/1964, p. 227. Presented on this map are the widespread subsp. acris, the arctic to subarctic-montane subsp. pumilus (Wahlenb.) Böcher and three E. Asiatic taxa, viz. subsp. nipponicus (Rara) Hult., subsp. japonicus (Thunb.) Hult. and the species R. grandis Honda. The present species s. lat. has been widely distributed by man within and outside the original areas, for instance to N. America and New Zealand. With its present distribution the species belongs to the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 398 f. and map 288). Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 164.
