This rather widespread species is native in Europe, N. Africa and W. Asia and has spread with settlement within and outside the distribution area. It has also been introduced into Ethiopia, N. and S. America and New Zealand. P. simplex Michx may be taken as a N. American counterpart. Its distribution is tentatively marked by a braken line.
