This species is mainly restricted to Europe. As it is used for ornamental purposes it has been spread within and without the original range, i. e. N. Europe in the lowlands, southwards more in the mountains. The closely related R. maximoviczianum Kom., occurring in E. Asia, is tentatively shown on the map. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 207.
