This impressive species occurs in most of Europe (except N), W. Asia and northernmost Africa. The closely related C. kirganica Kom. and C. rugulosa Kuk. in E. Asia and the N. American C. lacustris (Willd.) Kuk. are tentatively mapped. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 79.
