This widespread species occurs as a native plant in Eurasia and probably NW. Africa. Finds of fossils from the postglacial warmth period in N. Fennoscandia indicates more favourable environmental conditions there at that time. The species has been introduced into N. America, Australia and New Zealand. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1978, map p. 385.
