This species s. lat. is widely distributed in Eurasia and N. America. Besides the Eurasiatic subsp. hypopitys (incl. M hypophegea Wallr.), subsp. japonica (Franch. & Sav.) Hult. in C. and E. Asia and subsp. lanuginosa (Michx) Hara in N. America are mapped. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1978, map p. 325.
