Total range of this arctic and northern boreal-montane species belongs to the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 28 and map 19), although it has a gap in the North-Atlantic region and perhaps also in W. Siberia. The closely related P. ramosa Miyoshi is restricted to Japan (mountains of Honshu).
