1723 Plantago indica L.

Syn.: P. arenaria Waldst. & Kit.

This species occurs probably indigenously in C., S. and SE. Europe and adjacent parts of Africa and Asia. Its relation to P. psyllium L. is interpreted differently. Generally, they are taken as synonyms (Fl. Eur. 4/1976, p. 43). Here P. psyllium is regarded as a southern counterpart to P. indica (see the map). P. indica (or both taxa) have been introduced as weeds into several parts of the world, for instance the British Isles, Fennoscandia, Africa, N. and S. America and S. Australia.
