Two subspecies of this species originate from America, viz. subsp. peregrina in southern and eastern N. America and introduced into Europe, and subsp. xalapensis (Humb., Bonpl. & Kunth) Penn. in large parts of C. and N. America. This subspecies has also spread into Europe as well as S. America. E. and SE. Asia and S. Australia. The present distribution of the species has a tendency towards the circumpolar type (Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 308, 403 and map 300).
