This variable species. is, in a broad sense, circumpolar (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 98 and map 90). It has often escaped from cultivation in gardens, which confuses the original distribution pattern. However, the adventive occurrences are, as far as possible, excluded from the map. In N. Europe at least t wo main taxa may be distinguished, viz. subsp. schoenoprasum, occurring mainly along the seacoasts, and the mainly arctic-montane subsp. sibiricum (L.) Celak. intruding in N. Fennoscandia from the east (cf. Hultén, Atlas 1971, maps 485 and 486).
