This arctic species is widely distributed in N. Eurasia and N. America. On the Aleutian Islands and the NW. mountains of N. America var. nana (Willd.) Hult. is distinguished. The species belongs to the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 20 and map 12).
