64 Dryopteris filix-mas (L.) Schott
This widespread species s. str. occurs in Europe, W. and C. Asia, N. America, probably Mexico and in S. America (Argentina). Cf. world map in Meusel et al. 1965, p. 17. The population in E. Asia should be distinguished as D. sichotensis Kom. (written communication by Chr. Fraser-Jenkins). In a wide sense this species belongs to the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 118 and map 110). According to Fraser-Jenkins the following closely related European taxa (probably often confused with D. filix-mas) should be mentioned, viz. D. oreades Fomin (syn.: D. abbreviata auct.) mainly in W. Europe, NE. Turkey and Caucasus, D. tyrrhena Fras.Jenk. & Reichst. in parts of SW. Europe and D. caucasica (A. Br.) Fras.-Jenk. & Corley in SE. Europe and adjacent parts of Asia.
