Within the vast Eurasiatic and N. American area of this rather variable species some lower taxa are distinguished (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 70). They are not registered separately on the map. The northern subsp. pungens (La Pylaie) Hult., including subsp. alpestre (Hartm.) A. & D. Löve, is mapped in Hultén, Circumpol. I, map 62, and Fl. Alaska Neighbor. Terr., map p. 27, and subsp. dubium Zoega is mapped in Meusel & Hemmerling, Bärlappe Eur. 1969, map 16. The species s. lat. belongs to the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 70 and map 62).
