Syn.: P. communis Trin.

This widespread, almost cosmopolitic species is polymorphic. In Africa and SW Asia the species is represented by var. isiaca (Del.) Coss (mainly S of the toothed line), in N. America and possibly E. Asia by var. berlandieri (Tourn.) Fem. The species is reported among the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 174 and map 166).
