This species, common in Europe, may be both native and introduced in N. America (Fernald). However, it is also maintained that the species is only introduced there (Cronqvist). It has been introduced into New Zealand. The present distribution is amphi-atlantic (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 138 and map 120). Cf. also Meusel et al. 1978, map p. 400.
