This arctic-montane species is rather variable (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 198; Fl. Eur. 1/1964, p. 172). The population in N. America from Alaska southwards along the Rocky Mts. is distinguished as subsp. subacaulescens (Will.) Hitchc. & Maguire. The species belongs to the amphi-atlantic plants (Hultén, op. cit.).
