This species is mainly restricted to Europe and parts of Asia. It has been spread in the rural landscape towards the north of Europe. It is now less frequent than earlier. It has been introduced into N. America (probably more than indicated on the map) and into New Zealand. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 49.
