1051 Rubus arcticus L.

Total range of this widespread, subartic-boreal species is widely distributed in Eurasia and N. America. It is probably extinct at some of the southernmost European localities. Some lower taxa are distinguished, viz., besides subsp. arcticus in N. Europe and Siberia to Alaska, subsp. acaulis (Michx) Focke in northern N. America, hybridizing with the white-flowering R. pubescens Raf. (cf. in no. 1052), subsp. stellatus (Sm.) Boiv. in the Pacific region of northwestern N. America and NE. Asia and subsp. fragarioides (Bertol.) Hult. in the S.C. Asiatic mountains. For the taxonomy and nomenclature, see Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 164, 373 ff. The species s. lat. belongs to the circumpolar plants (op. cit.).
