This polymorphic species seems to originate from C. and S. Europe and adjacent parts of Africa and Asia. Four subspecies are distinguished in Europe (Fl. Eur. 3/1972, p. 250), of which subsp. hederifolia and subsp. lucorum (Klett & Richt.) Hartl reach northwards into Fennoscandia as weeds. The species has been introduced into N. America, Japan, S.
