This species is mainly restricted to the seacoasts of W. and N. Europe. It occurs as a casual at the Gulf of Bothnia. The local occurrences on the coast of southeastern N. America are probably not native (cf., however, Fernald, Manual 1950, p. 303). Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 67.
