This sea-shore plant occurs along the coasts of W. and partly N. Europe. The occurrences on the Swedish west coast and on the island of Åland are casual. Furthermore, the closely related P. filiformis (Roth) C. E. Hubb. (syn.: Lepturus filiformis [Roth] Trin.) is mapped. It grows mainly on the Mediterranean coasts and in a few places (even inland localities) farther to the east.
