This species is mainly restricted to Europe, with 4 subspecies according to F l. Eur. 3/1972, p. 17, int. al. subspp. veris (southwards to the Alps) and macrocalyx (Bge) Liidi occurring in parts of E. Europe and C. Asia (mapped here). Cf. also Meusel et al. 1978, map p. 337.
