This species is mainly restricted to the arctic and montane regions of N. Europe. The map includes also the closely related species S. breviserrata Flod. (syn.: S. myrsinites subsp. serrata [Neilr.] Schinz & Tell.) and S. alpina Scop. (syn.: S. jacquinii Host) occurring in the Pyrenees, Alps and adjacent mountains, S. rectijulis Ledeb. ex Trautv. in the C. Asiatic mountains and S. chamissonis Anderss. in E. Asia and Alaska.
