This sea-shore plant is restricted to Europe. It may be extinct at some of the localities on the British Isles. The localities in SW. Europe are uncertain. The population at the Black Sea is sometimes reported as C. pontica Stev. ex Rupr. C. maritima is occasionally cultivated and has escaped in inland parts of C. Europe.
