1860 Onopordon acanthium L.

This species occurs as a native plant probably in parts of Europe and W. Asia. Besides subsp. acanthium, two subspecies with restricted geographical distribution are distinguished (Fl. Eur. 4/1976, p. 245 f.). The species has spread northwards with human activities. It has been introduced into N. and S. America, Australia and New Zealand.
