Syn.: Poterium sanguisorba L.

This mainly Eurasiatic, rather widespread and polymorphic species has six subspecies according to Fl. Eur. 2/1968, p. 34. Of these subsp. muricata Briq. (not mapped here) originates from S. Europe but is naturalized in C. and parts of N. Europe, subsp. minor occurs throughout most of the range of the species, subsp. magnolii (Spach.) Briq. in the Mediterranean region and subsp. lasiocarpa (Boiss. & Hausskn.) Nordb. in Asia Minor and eastwards. The species has been introduced into N. America, Chile and New Zealand. S. minor is also recorded as a fossil (Godwin, Hist. Brit. Fl. 1956, p. 118). Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 222.
