703 Suaeda maritima (L.) Dum.

This polymorphic species includes here those subspecies which are mentioned in Fl. Eur. 1/1964, p. 104, viz. maritima (incl. prostrata [Pall.] Soó), salsa (L.) Soó and panonica (G. Beck) Soó, which have their own particular distribution pattern. In N. America the species (subsp. maritima) is considered native, although this is doubted by Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 188. In Europe, at least, it is easily spread by man (see the map). The species s. lat. belongs at least nowadays to the discontinuous circumpolar plants (1. cit.). Outside the holarctic region it occurs in many places. There its origin seems still to be unclear.
