This sea-shore species includes the circumpolar subsp. peploides (Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 186 and map 177), subsp. major Hook.) Hult. on the Pacific coasts of E. Asia and N. America and subsp. robusta (Fem.) Mattf. on the Atlantic coast of N. America. The species is introduced in S. Argentina and Chile. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 150.
