This Eurasiatic species is insufficiently known in large parts of Asia. The E. Asiatic population is distinguished as var. maximowiczii Regel or S. orientalis Ohwi. Closely related species occur in N. America, viz. S. expansus Fem. in the east, S. microcarpus Presl in the west and northwest and probably Kamchatka and S. rubrotinctus Fem. in the eastern and central states (Fernald, Manual 1950, p. 273). All these taxa together have a circumpolar distribution (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 176 and map 158). Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 60.
