This arctic-montane species is confined to Europe (and W. Siberia?). Some closely related taxa are also mapped, viz. S. foetida Schleich. ex DC. (W. Alps and Pyrenees), S. waldsteiniana W illd. (the Alps and the Balkan mountains), S. kazbekensis Skvorts. (Caucasus) and some C. and E. Asiatic species (mapped separately in Skvortsov, Willows of the USSR, Moscow 1968, p. 186 ff.).
