This taxon is restricted to the coasts of N. and W. Europe. The taxonomic affinities between this taxon and P. pulvinata (Krecz.) Tzvel. and P. coarctata Fem. & Weath. (see no. 255), both in Tolmatchev Fl. Aret. URSS 2/1964, p. 202 f., seem to be uncertain.
