This rather variable species (incl. subsp. supina [Schrad.] Link; see no. 211) is supposed to originate from Europe, from where it has been widely spread through human activity over large parts of the world (Africa, Asia, N. and S. America, Australia, New Zealand). The present distribution is circumpolar (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 198 and map 187).
