This widespread species belongs to a group of closely related taxa (cf. Fl. Eur. 5/1980, p. 161f.). P. pratensis subsp. angustifolia (L.) Gaudin and P. alpigena (Fr.) Lindm. are mapped separately (nos. 216 and 217). The distribution is circumpolar (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 200 and map 190). From there it has been spread by man into countries outside the map area (S. Africa, S. America, Australia, New Zealand).
