391 Scirpus tabernaemontani C. C. Gmel.

Syn.: S. glaucus Sm., Schoenoplectus tabernaemontani (C. C. Gmel.) Palla

This species is also regarded as S. lacustris subsp. tabernaemontani (C. C. Gmel.) Syme (cf. PI. Eur. 5/1980, p. 278). It occurs through most of Eurasia, in N. and W. Europe mainly restricted to brackish water on the seacoasts. It is also reported from Sahara and S. Africa, possibly as a native plant. In N. America it is replaced by S. validus Vahl (var. creber Fem. according to Fernald, Manual 1950, p. 270). Closely related taxa occur in, for instance, SE. Asia, Australia and New Zealand as well as in S. America. The two species mentioned above have together an almost circumpolar distribution (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 251 and map 152).
