This species is mainly restricted to Europe (except extreme N and partly E). The population in the W. Iberian area is distinguished as subsp. lusitanica (Schkuhr) Maire. This species (or a very closely related taxon) is reported from Australia and New Zealand. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 65.
